ETHER REFINERY OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI--DESTREHAN STREET PLANT (Engineering Materials)
This package contains 49 drawings. The ether refinery process converts crude uranium ore concentrates to highly purified uranium trioxide (UO/sub 3/). Ore concentrates are first dissolved in nitric acid. Extraction of the resulting uranyl nitrate from the digest liquor is accomplished in extraction columns with diethyl ether. The uranyl nitrate is then reextracted from the ether into water. This water layer, containing virtually all the uranium, is freed from ether, concentrated, and the material put through a second ether extraction for further purification. The final steps in the process involve concentrating the highly purified water solution obtained from the second extraction, and then thermally denitrating in gas fired kettles. The UO/sub 3/ product is a bright orange powder. Auxiliary facilities include feed preparation, nitric acid recovery, raffinate treatment, ether recovery, and pulverizing, screening, and packaging of product. (R.E.D.)
