REMOVAL OF FOREIGN ORGANIC MATERIALS FROM TBP-KEROSENE SOLVENT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4696647

Three major sources of organic contamination of the trin-butyl (TBP)- kerosene solvent that was used in an ore refinery extraction system were identified. Two of the tramp materials, lubricating oils used in the extraction system and organic materials present in the incoming feed concentrates, can build up rapidly in the TBP-kerosene system and quickly render the solvent unsuitable for uranium extraction in the pulse column system. The third source of contamination was the nitration of the kerosene in the solvent. The foreign organic materials can be detected qualitatively and to some extent quantitatively through coalescence time testing and a light transmittance test of the solvent. A nitric acid saturation---charcoal adsorption treatment was deveioped to remove the tramp materials from the TBP-kerosene solvent and rehabilitate the solvent for uranium extraction purposes. A plant solvent treatment system process was designed and installed in the ore refinery. (auth)
