MELTING AND CASTING OF THE REFRACTORY METALS MOLYBDENUM, COLUMBIUM, TANTALUM, AND TUNGSTEN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4078281
The technology of melting and casting refractory metals is considered from the standpoint of ingots and shaped castings. The production of ingots is more advanced than is the production of shaped castings. Molybdenum and niobium were centrifugally cast with some success. Shaped castings of tantalum were produced experimentally. No satisfactory method for the production of shaped tungsten castings is presently available. There is an indicated need for shaped castings of the refractory metals, and further development work appears to be justified. The cold-crucible induction furnace, presently under development for titanium, might be adapted for the refractory metals. (auth)
