CHLORANILIC ACID AS A REAGENT IN THE PAPER CHROMATOGRAPHY OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS. II. HEAVIER METALS

The use of chloranilic acid was studied as a reagent in the paper chromatography of some of the heavier metuls. Sensitivity is found to vary from 0.01 mu g for ferric iron to 5.0 mu g for Hg(II) and zinc. It was found that iron gives tailing spots with moat of the solvent systems, which interferes with the separation of the other cations. This interference was avoided by using acetone- acetic acid, which displaces iron to the solvent front. Efficient two- dimensionul separations were obtained by carrying out a second mn with ethanol- acetic acid. (auth)
