DETECTION OF SUBMICROGRAM AMOUNTS OF FLUORIDE ON THE RING OVEN WITH THORIUM CHLORANILATE

A method is described for the determination of submicrogram amounts of fluoride using the ring oven and thorium chloranilate as the reagent. As little as 0.1 mu g of fluoride as sodium fluoride can be detected by the method. A semiquantitative relationship was noted between intensity of the color of the ring and amount of fluoride in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 mu g of fluoride. The method is simple and rapid, and it has sufficient sensitivity for many applications. (P.C.H.)
