EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON RADIOACTIVE ZINC IN THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS OF THE RAT

Zinc-65 was given intramuscularly to male rats and the concentration and localization in the reproductive organs was determined by scintillation measurements and radioautography. The experimental techniques used are described in detail. The Zn showed a differential localization in the seminiferous tubuli of the testis and was found to be transported through the ductus epididymidis and the vos deferens by products from the testis. Observations indicate that the spermatozoa were the transpoat vehicle of Zn/sup 6//sup 5/ and that the uptake of Zn/sup 6//sup 5/ occurred in spermatozoa which were almost ready to leave the seminiferous tubuli. Based on these observations, the time of passage for the spermatozoa from the semineferous tubuli to the caput eipdidymidis was estimated at about 7 days and the time between the caput and the cauda was also estimated to be about 7 days.
