ELECTROSHOCK SEIZURES IN RAT AFTER X-IRRADIATION

Journal Article · · Sb. Ved. Praci Lekar. Fak. Karlovy Univ. Hradei Kralove

Studies were made on the effects of x radiation on the central nervous system of rats using electroshock seizures as indicators. Whole-body irradiation with doses ranging from 390 to 700 r (in air) shortened the duration of tonic seizures 3 hr after irradiation for at least 3 days. Cysteine in a dose of 800 mg/kg, administered 10 min before irradiation was followed by a statistically significant increase of the duration of tonic seizures whereas in non-irradiated rats it was without effect. It was concluded that electroshock seizures indicate direct damage to the CNS. (P.C.H.)
