A pyrotron for confining a plasma is described which consists of an elongated vacuum chamber in which an axially symmetric magnetic field is set up with axially spaced, nodal reflector field regions. This pyrotron is designed for expanding the plasma during a thermonuclear reaction in order to control the reaction. The programming circuitry is also described. (D.L.C.)
