An Astron-type apparatus is designed for producing controlled thermonuclear reactions. In the apparatus, an elongated, axially symmetric magnetic field is established in an evacuated vessel, and relativistic electrons are injected into the field to form a rotating sheath (E-layer) for effecting ionization, heating, confinement, and production of thermonuclear reactions. The theory and operation of the apparatus are discussed in detail. Parameters are given for a 500-Mw Astron reactor. (D.L.C.)
