An Astron-type thermonuclear reactor is designed in which a layer of relativistic electrons rotating in a magnetic field is used to effect ionization, heating, confinement, and utilization of a plasma. The reactor comprises an elongated cylindrical vessel, solenoid means for producing an axial magnetic field with a central region of uniform intensity and end regions of increased intensity within the vessel, means for injecting high-energy electrons tangentially into the field, and means for introducing thermonuclear fuel into the field.
