THE EFFECT OF THE /cap alpha/ $Yields$ /cap beta/ $Yields$ /cap alpha/ PHASE TRANSFORMATION ON THE PREFERRED ORIENTATION OF /cap alpha/ URANIUM

Journal Article · · J. Nuclear Materials

Dilatometric, metallographic, and x-ray observations were made on specimens of rolled uranium rod subjected to varying amounts of transformation into the beta phase in a temperature gradient. The results show that the phase change is accomplished by a transformation band of mixed alpha and beta phases passing through each specimen and that the amount of the loss of preferred orientation is a junction of the degree of transformation. A mechanism to account for this is discussed. (auth)
