THE $alpha$ $Yields$ $beta$ PHASE TRANSFORMATION IN URANIUM

The kinetics of the alpha yields BETA phase transformation of two grades of uranium were studied by dilatometric methods. With pure uranium, it was shown that the transformation can proceed isothermally to completion only a few degrees above the alpha / BETA equilibrium temperature, although the last stages are very sluggish. If the transformation is allowed to go to completion, the preferred orientation is largely destroyed at the low BETA -phase temperatures. The mechanism of transformation is discussed. (auth)
