MICROSTRUCTURAL CHANGES DURING THE /cap alpha/-/cap beta/-/cap alpha/ TRANSFORMATION OF URANIUM

The changes in the grain structure of U during an alpha - BETA - alpha transformation cycle were examined with a hot-stage optical microscope and photographed on movie film. An apparent superheating'' effect was observed while heating through the alpha - BETA transformation. A finite time at a BETA -phase temperature was required before the transformation front passed through the field of view. Cooling to the alpha phase before thc alpha - BETA front passed resulted in grain growth without the passage of a front. A similar front was observed during the P-k transformation. In both transformations the main front was composed of sub-fronts'' that defined the resulting grain size. (auth)
