IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A PROCESS FOR THE ENRICHMENT OF AMMONIA IN DEUTERIUM
A process and apparatus are described for the enrichment of NH/sub 3/ in D/sub 2/ by isotopic exchange between liquid NH/sub 3/ and gaseous H/sub 2/, using a cold and hot tower system. In this process, the gaseous phase is saturated with the vapor of the liquid phase containing a nonvolatile alkali metal amide catalyst, and liquid NH/sub 3/ containing the catalyst is circulated in a closed circuit to make up the NH/sub 3/ removed in the saturated gaseous phase. In order to avoid an accumulation of catalyst, a makeup quantity of liquid NH/sub 3/ containing catalyst is introduced into the circuit, the makeup quantity being sufficient to allow saturation of the gaseous phase and withdrawal of the liquid having the most catalyst.
