IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTION OF DEUTERIUM-ENRICHED COMPOUNDS
A process for producing deuterium-enriched NH/sub 3/ or H/sub 2/ is given wherein the NH/sub 3/-natural H/sub 2/O isotopic exchange reaction is replaced by a H/sub 2/-steam isotopic exchange reaction. In this process, circulating H/sub 2/ is contacted with liquid NH/sub 3/ containing KNH/sub 2/ catalyst in each tower of a two-tower dual-lemperature apparatus. Deuterium- enriched NH/sub 3/ or H/sub 2/ is extracted from one of the deuterium-enriched streams between the hot and cold iowers and subjected to distillation to increase the enrichment. Depleted H/sub 2/ leaving the cold tower is regenerated by contacting with steam of natural deuterium content in the presence of a catalyst for the H/sub 2/steam reaction. The advantages of using the H/sub 2/-steam reaction in place of the NH/sub 3/-H/sub 2/O reaction for regeneration are simpler separation of water vapor from the regenerated H/sub 2/, possible reductions in stream sizes, and economy.
