APPARATUS FOR BENDING BEAMS OF CHARGED PARTICLES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4064606

An efficient beam scanner assembly was developed. An apparatus for bending a beam of charged particles of different energies, so that the beam after bending has a particle-energy gradient across it, is described. The apparatus consists of a bending magnet with pole pieces disposed on opposite sides of the beam. The magnet was arranged to apply to the particles in the beam magnetic forces such that particles of greater energy travel along longer trajectories between the pole pieces than particles of lower energy and that particles of all energies are deflected through approximately the same angle.
