APPARATUS FOR SCANNING A SURFACE WITH A BEAM OF CHARGED PARTICLES
An apparatus was designed for scanning a surface with a beam of charged particles. It consists of an electromagnet and a means for applying a time- varying current to the windings of the electromagnet to generate a magnetic field between pole faces of the electromagnet. The pole faces are so shaped that there is a flux density gradient in the gap between the pole faces and means for directing a beam of charged particles, with a particle energy gradient across it, through the gap in such a manner that particles of greater energy pass through a portion of the magnetic field where the flux density is greater than the portion through which pass particles of lower energy, so that all the particles are deflected through approximately the same angle.
