PARAMAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTRA OF f$sup 3$ IONS IN A CUBIC SITE

The paramagnetic resonance spectra of Nd/sup 3//sup +/ and U/sup 3//sup +/ in the cubic field of CaF/sub 2/ are investigated at 3-cm wavelength at 20 deg K. ln the case of Nd/sup 3//sup +/, transitions within the lowest quartet GAMMA /sub 8/ and possibly in the next higher quartet GAMMA /sub 8/ are observed. The angular behavior conforms with that predicted by the spin Hamiltonian of a GAMMA /sub 8/ state. In the case of U/sup 3//sup +/ there are considerable deviations of the experimental g values from the calculated ones. It is suggested that these deviations are caused by the stronger cubic field. The efficiency of the thermal conversion from axial to cubic site is discussed. Additional lines suggest a new axial center along the STA111! direction. (auth)
