In rare earth ions it is often found that the ground state consists of a degenerate quartet. Cases when this may occur are discussed. The spin Hamiltonian is solved for the particular case of f3 and the angular variation as well as the transition probabilities are computed. The theoretical calculations are compared with the experimental data obtained for Nd/sup 3+/ and U/sup 3+/ in cubic sites of CaF/sub 2/. A short description on the thermal treatment is given. (auth)
