ATOMIC-BEAM INVESTIGATIONS OF ELECTRONIC AND NUCLEAR GROUND STATES IN THE RARE-EARTH REGION

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
A number of radioactive isotopes in the rare-earth region are investigated, using the atomic-beam magneticresonance technique. The total electronic angular momentum (J) and the atomic g value (gJ) are determined for some low-lying levels in, Pm, Dy, Ho, and Er. These observations are consistent with the following ground- state assignments: PmI-- (4f)/sup 5/ (6s)/sup 2/, /sup 6/H/sub 5/2/; DyI- (4f)/sup 1//sup 0/(6s)/sup 2/, /sup 5/I/sub 8/; HoI - (4f)/sup 1//sup 1/(6s)/sup 2/, 4I/sub 15/2/; snd ErI - (4f) (6s)/sup 2/, /sup 3/H/sub 6/ . The groundlevel assignments agree with the Hund's-rule predictions, and the g values approximate the Lande values well. Experimental knowledge concerning electronic ground states in the rare-earth region is summarized. The following nuclear spin (I) values are obtained: Pm/sup 1//sup 4//sup 9/, 7/2; Pm/sup 1//sup 5//sup 1/, Gd/sup 1//sup 5//sup 9/ 3/2. Tb/sup 1//sup 6//sup 0/ 3; Dy/sup 1//sup 6//sup 5/ 7/2; Dy/sup 1//sup 6//sup 6/, 0; 27 hr Ho/sup 1//sup 6//sup 6/, 0; Er/ sup 1//sup 6//sup 9/ 1/2; Er/sup 1//sup 7//sup 1/, 5/2; and Tm/sup 1//sup 7//sup 1/, 1/2. These values are compar ed with beta-decay results. Most of these isotopes have large nuclear deformations, and the spin values are discussed in relation to the single-particle energy-level diagrams given by Nilsson. A few results are explained with the shell model. (auth)
