THE REACTION OF SOME ENZYMES IN STRIATED MUSCLE DURING ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS (in French)

By histochemical methods a study was made of the localization and activity of succinic dehydrogenase, DPNH-diaphorase, and ATP-ase in striated muscle of guinea pigs 24 hr, and 4, 6, and 11 days after total irradiation. The results indicate that the activity of the oxidizing enzymes and the ATP-ase increases 24 hr after irradiation and then decreases as radiation sickness develops. In the muscles of controls and irradiated animals two histochemical types of fibril were observed. The smaller fibrils show a strong succinic dehydrogenase and DPNH-diaphorase activity, which is probably due to differences in the metabolism of muscle fibers. The increase in urinary creatine excretion described earlier in the literature in irradiated animals, which is caused by disturbances in resynthesis of phosphocreatine is thought to be due to disturbances in the processes of phosphorylation in the muscles under the influence of x rays. The reduction in the ATP-ase activity of the endothelium of the blood vessels may provoke changes in the transport of substrates from the blood to the sarcoplasma. (auth)
