The mechanism of dissociation of BETA -soild solution titanium with rhenium 119.81 wt.%) at 400 deg C was analyzed by metallographic and x-ray diffraction analyses. The results indicate the following scheme: BETA -- BETA + omega - BETA + alpha . Hardness measurements show an increase that is more pronounced before the alloy reaches the omega phase than after; in the first instance it increases 97 kg/mm/sup 2/, in the second 30 kg/mm/sup 2/. The hardness of the Ti--Re BETA phase is explained by crystal lattice distortion. (R.V.J.)
