Male white mice, three months old, were whole-body x-irradiated at 33 r/ min to 200 or 400 r. At intervals up to 140 days they, along with unirradiated mice, were irradiated with a second dose of 200 r. Testicle changes were observed in histological sections. In these two-stage irradiations, the effects were additive. With an interval of three or four days between irradiations, the weight changes were the same as for mice that had been irradiated to the same level in a single dose. At times 49 to 140 days after the 200-r irradiation, the radiation sensitivity of the testicles was the same as that in unirradiated animals. In the mice initially irradiated to 400 r, at 49 to 70 days after the irradiation the testicle sensitivity had returned to its initial level; however, at 98 to 140 days a small increase in radiation sensitivity was observed. The rate of return to normal was much slower in the testicle than in the organism as a whole. The period of return of radiation sensitivity of the testicle to its original level coincides with that of full restoration of the spermatogonia in the canals, which is the most radiation sensitive stage in the development of the germinal epithelium.
