THE REACTION OF THE SPERMATOGENETIC EPITHELIUM IN MICE TO PROLONGED CHRONIC IRRADIATION WITH SMALL DOSES OF Co$sup 60$ GAMMA-RAYS (in Russian)

White mice 20 to 22 grams in weight were kept near a Co/sup 60/ source, and were given a total dose of 3.6 r over a period of 6 months. A histological study of the seminal canals showed that the distribution of spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids, and spermatozoids in the seminal canals of irradiated mice was the same as that in the unirradiated mice. These irradiated mice, and a group of control mice were then subjected to a single x-ray dose of 400 and 600 r. On the 30th day after the irradiation with a 600 r dose, it was found that the number of seminal canals not containing spermatogonia was a factor of 1.6 greater in the experimental group than in the control group (31.6 and 19.2% respectively). On the 30th day after irradiation with a dose of 400 r, the seminal canals not containing spermatocytes was a factor of 2 greater in the experimental group than in the control group (49.5% for the experimental group, and 23.7% for the control group). Thus, a relatively small dose administered over a long period of time showed no morphological changes, but the irradiated tissue turned out to be sensitive to an additional large dose of radiation. The radiation damage shows up as a difference in the development of regenerative processes after a traumatic shock. (TTT)
