Energy dispersive x-ray counting of radioactive species produced by charged particle activation was studied as a nondestructive multielement trace analysis method for elements of Z greater than or equal to 26. Experimentally determined thick target yields and interference-free detection limits are presented for proton and deuteron activation products of 37 elements. These detection limits range from 1 x 10$sup -4$ microgram for Mo to 3.4 microgram for Rh for a 6 microamphere-hour irradiation with 20 MeV protons. The application of this technique is illustrated with data on the simultaneous determination of up to 26 elements in NBS standard glass samples at the 500-, 50- and 1-ppM levels using 20-MeV proton activation.
