The administration of purified human properdine (single dose 25 units/kg body weight injected intraveneously) two hours before massive whole-body x- irradiation (2000 r) causes in rabits a survival, for 50% of the animals treated, beyond the 192nd hour after irradiation. Control rabbits, inversely, die within the third hour. Moreover, while in the experimental animals the properdine level is maintained within normal limits, in the controls there is a sharp and distinct drop of this defensive index. (tr-auth)
