Immunocompetent cells in man. III. The killer cell activity of normal circulating lymphocytes

Circulating lymphocytes obtained from normal individuals are capable of inducing cytotoxic death of $sup 51$Cr-labeled rabbit spleen target cells in culture. An incubation time of 16 to 24 hr was sufficient to permit optimal cytolysis of the target cells. The cytotoxic activity was a property of the living cells as neither sonicated nor irradiated human cells displayed cytotoxic activity. The data suggest that this culture system may provide a rapid indicator for the immunocompetence of circulating human lymphocytes, insofar as their ability to express cell-mediated immunity is concerned.
