PROGRESSIVE ALTERATION OF SERUM PROTEINS IN RATS SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER AN ACUTE OR PROTRACTED IRRADIATION

Sprague-Dawley rats six- to eight-weeks-old were given ₆₀Co gamma irradiation in doses ranging from immediately sublethal to the LD₅₀. One group of animals kept at 6 deg C for one month prior to irradiation was able to survive wholebody doses up to 1800 rads. Microdetermination of total serum proteins made in normal and irradiated rats by the Biuret method yielded no significant variations in the total serum proteins of any one group. However, the gamma -globulin fraction increased markedly in most irradiated rats. Cold acclimatization did not make signlficant alterations in the serum-protein pattern of irradiated rats, and no relation between magnitude of radiation dose and protein changes was observed in the dose-range used.
