CHANGE OF FUNCTION OF THE SUPRARENALS WITH ACUTE RADIATION INJURY (in German)

Journal Article · · Radiobiol. Radiotherap.
OSTI ID:4036897
Male rats received a 800 r whole-body x irradiation. The suprarenal region of the rats was entirely protected by means of Pb. The corticosterone content of the blood draining off the suprarenal gland was determined in vivo, the ability of the suprarenals to synthesize corticosterone was estimated in vitro. The suprarenals were examined histologically. The results were compared with data of equivalert animals that were irradiated under identical conditions, but which were not protected by Pb. The corticosterone content of the venous blood with the screened suprarenals was found to increase rapidly and to show even after 48 hr higher values than the group of nonscreened animals. In the unprotected animals the hormonal secretion in the terminal state virtually closed, whereas this phenomenon was not observed at all in the protected animals. The ability to synthesize throughout the experiment was higher in the protected group. This function may play a decisive part in the functions of resistance of the organism. (auth)
