The most probable products of a hot'' reaction are the formation of HT and a tagged compound. The effect of the liquid phase state on the replacement of a hydrogen atom by a tritium recoil atom was investigated by irradiating 0.02 g of Li/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ and 0.015 g of organic material in a quartz ampoule with a volume of 0.3 cm/sup 3/ for a period of 20 minutes at a neutron flux of 2 x 10/ sup 12/ neutrons cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ at temperatures of 40 and --195 deg C. The gas phase reaction was carried out with 0.008 g of organic material (a binary mixture of benzene and cyclohexane) in a quartz ampoule containing 0.5 g of Li/ sub 2/CO/sub 3/ in a volume of 3.5 cm/sup 3/. The gasphase irradiation required two hours at a neutron flux of 1 x 10/sup 12/ neutrons cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ and a temperature of 150 deg C. The irradiated samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. The yield of HT decreases and the yield of tagged hydrocarbon increases on going from a gas phase irradiation to a liquid phase irradiation. The radiochemical yield is not a linear function of the concentration of a component. The specific activity of benzene increases sharply on going to a state with a more ordered structure. (TTT)
