K, L, AND M INTERNAL CONVERSION COEFFICIENTS IN THE DECAY OF EUROPIUM-152 (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4031820
The internal-external conversion method was tested for scattering effects. Scattering effects should be exhibited by a change in /sup alpha /K with an increase in converter thickness. The measurements of /sup alpha /K of the 344-kev transition in Gd/sup 152/ yielded values of (291 plus or minus 15) x 10/sup -4/, (293 plus or minus 15) x 10/sup -4/, and (287 plus or minus 15) x 10/sup 4/ for the 1.12, 2.19, and 3.71 mg/cm/sup 2/ converters respectively. These results indicate that a converter thickness of 3.71 mg/cm/sup 2/ may be used at an energy of 344 kev. Combining the results for the three converters gives the result /sup alpha /K = (290 plus or minus 8) x 10/sup -4/, which is lower than the theoretical value 310 x 10/sup -4/. The result agrees within limits of error with the value (283 plus or minus 8) x 10/sup -4/ of Lu obtained by a coincidence method. The average of these two values, (287 plus or minus 8) x 10/sup -4/, is about 7% lower than the theoretical value. This deviation is about three times the error in /sup alpha /K. The K/L ratio of the 344-kev transition in /sup 152/Gd is found to agree with theory. The K/M+ deviation reported by other workers has been found for this transition also. Indicntions are that the K/M+ theoretical value, for which screening has not been taken into account, multiplied by 1.6 agrees with experimental results at this Z. (auth)
