LIQUID MODERATED NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4028495
For a liquid-moderated nuclear reactor an inlet device was designed to provide for the passage of at least one gas flow through at least one region of the liquid moderator in order to reduce the moderator density in the proximity of the gas flow, while an outiet device was designed to exhaust the gas from the reactor vessel. Preferably the inlet device comprises several tubes disposed at the bottom of the moderator vessel and in communication with the source of pressurized gas. For the injection of the gas the tubes are provided with openings into the vessel space, while the rising gas bubbles are collected at the top of the vessel in a space above the moderator level. According to another embodiment of the idea, the inlet device may be disposed within the reactor at an intermediary level, while a horizontal baffle-plate is placed at a certain distance under the moderator level in order to collect the gas and to guide it against an outlet tube, so as to produce at the bottom and at the top of the moderator space two regions, which are free from gas bubbles.
