LIQUID MODERATED NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4740476
A heterogeneous nuclear reactor comprises a lattice of parallel reactor channels in which a fluid circulates for cooling the fuel elemerts placed therein and a moderator structure constituted by a bundle of vertical tubes partially filled with moderator liquid and closely pressed together. The outer surfaces of these tubes which do not touch adjacent tubes form the lateral walls of the reactor channels. Preferably the tubes and the reactor channels have hexagonal cross sections, while the cooling fluid is constituted of steam. For cooling the moderator, liquid is removed from the tubes at the bottom, passes a heat exchanger, and is finally refed to the tubes at their tops so that the cold moderator liquid flows in the upper region of the tubes along the tube walls in order to remove heat from the walls. Preferably the cold moderator liquid first passes a separnted space at the top of the tube in order to form reflector regions for the reactor core. (IIB)
