SODIUM COOLED GRAPHITE MODERATED NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4730415
A sodium-cooled graphite-moderated nuclear reactor comprises a reactor tank in which a reactor core contniner is supported spaced from the side walls and the bottom of the tank. A neutron shielding cylinder encloses the core container so that between this shielding cylinder and the side walls of the tank an annular space remains in which a heat exchanger is placed. From the space over the reactor core the sodium reactor coolant flows down through the annular space and is cooled there by the heat exchanger and afterwards circulated by electromagnetic pumps via the space under the core container through vertical tubes passing through this core container. The ends of these tubes are tightly connected with respectively the bottom and the top of the core container so that the sodium cooling the fuel elemerts placed in these tubes is not in contact with the graphite moderator structure enclosed by the core container.
