NUCLEAR REACTOR COOLED WITH A CIRCULATING FLUID, MODERATED BY LIGHT WATER AND WITH NUCLEAR SUPERHEATING

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4740344
A heterogeneous nuclear reactor comprises a plurality of vertical reactor tubes disposed within the reactor pressure vessel. The lower open ends of these tubes are in communication with the space enclosed by the reactor vessel and which is partially filled with water constituting the reactor cooling and moderating fluid. The tubes communicate via the upper open ends with a steam header placed above the reactor core within the reactor pressure vessel. The reactor cooling fluid entering these tubes at their lower ends is heated while in contact with the reactor fuel elements placed within the tubes and is collected in the steam header before leaving the reactor vessel via an exit duct. The water level within the pressure vessel is higher than the top extremity of the steam header. The space above the level is in adjustable communication with the steam exit duct in order to control the steam pressure. In this way the coolart flow entering the reactor tubes is controlled. (IIB)
