FRACTIONATED, LOW DOSE-RATE IRRADIATION OF MICE WITH FISSION NEUTRONS AND Co$sup 60$ GAMMA-RAYS

Journal Article · · Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4025101
Data are presented on the comparative effects of fission neutrons and / sup 60/Co gamma rays on lethality in CFl mice. Exposed female mice received 13 weekly doses of 300 rads delivered in one, three, or six equal fractions per week; or 60 rads of fission neutrons delivered weekly in one, three, or six fractions. All animals were exposed in the gamma-neutron radiation chamber at the CP-5 reactor. Fission neutrons were found to be three times as effective as gamma rays for acute 30-day lethality. Thymic lymphomas were the leading cause of death in the neutron-irradiated mice, but gamma irradiated animals, dying much earlier than the neutronirradiated ones, did not live long enough to develop such tumors.
