A solid moderator core structure is designed for gascooled graphite- moderated reactors. The structure comprises an assembly of spaced vertical columns of graphite blocks within a constrained framework. The columns are divided into static columns and dynamic columns in which clocks can move vertically. The columns are arranged so that each dynamic column is surrounded by four static columns and vice versa, and wedges are provided between the columns, with their inclined plane surfaces in sliding contact with similarly inclined plane surfaces in the dynamic column block ends and their vertical plane in sliding contact with the static column sides. The structure can be keyed solidly to the supporting base plate while providing compensation for irradiation growth or shrinkage and differential thermal expansion. (D. L. C.)
