DETERMINATION OF OXYGEN IN METALS BY 14-Mev NEUTRON ACTIVATION (in Japanese)

A method is described for the determination of oxygen in metals by 14 Mev neutron activation. The analytical instrument consists of a 14 Mev neutron generator (10/sup 10/ neutron/sec), an automatic controller with a sample transfer system, a C-R neutron monitoring system (automatically normalizing) with automatic corrections for the influence of the fluctuation of neutron flux at a bombardment of samples, and a measuring apparatus. Analytical results for oxygen in iron, titanium, Zircaloy, copper, stainless steel, and nickel by the proposed neutron activation method are in good agreement with those by the vacuum fusion technique. The limit of detection by the method is about 200 mu g, and the precision is about plus or minus 5 approximates 10% in level of 1 mg oxygen content. The method is rapid and nondestructive, and some thirty prepared samples can be analyzed in an hour. It is useful for industrial purposes such as the quality control of metallic products. (auth)
