PREPARATION OF NIOBIUM BY REDUCTION OF NbCl$sub 5$ BY HYDROGEN (in Russian)

The equilibrium constants and the yield of the reaction (NbCl/sub 5/) + 2/sup 1/2(H/sub 2/) in equilibrium (Nb) + 5(HCl) were studied as functions of the temperature and NbCl/sub 5/ concentration. Purified niobium was precipitated on a 0.2-mm-thick, 5-mm-wide, and 100-mm-long heated niobium band at 820 to 1600 deg C. It was found that with 0.1 to 0.2 mole NbCl/sub 5/ and one mole of NbCl/ sub 5/-H/sub 2/O mixture at 1000 to 1300 deg the rate of niobium precipitation was 0.7 to 1.5 g/cm/sup 2//hr with a yield of 1.5 to 3.2 g Nb per mole of mixture, with l5 to 30% transformation of NbCl/sub 5/ into metal.
