CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHEMISTRY OF THE ELEMENTS NIOBIUM AND TANTALUM. XXI. PREPARATIVE STUDIES WITH SECONDARY NIOBIUM CHLORIDES (in German)

Journal Article · · Z. anorg. u. allgem. Chem.
The system niobium-chlorine has been investigated. The formation of niobium trichloride, with a composition range from NbCl/sub 2.67/ to NbCl/sub 3.1/ , has been studied by thermal decomposition of niobium tetrachloride, reduction of NbCl/sub 5/ with hydrogen, and the chemical transport reaction: NbCl/sub x(s)/ + (4 - x) NbCl/sub 5(g)/= (5 - x) NbCl/sub 4(g)/. The thermal and chemical properties of the niobium trichioride phase are described. Niobium(II) chloride which is a stoichiometric compound is formed in the reactions Nb + NbCl/sub 2.67/ , Nb + NbCl/sub 5/, and NbCl/sub 5/ + H/sub 2/. There is no evidence for the existence of niobium(I) chloride. (auth)
