Thermodynamic data for Ta and Nb chloride reduction and equilibrium coefficients at 700 to 2000 deg K were analyzed and tabulated. High yields of tantalum were observed at 1200 to 1700 deg K. Experiments on hydrogen reduction of TaCl/sub 5/ in a tubular device, per 10 min operation with 0.41 to 0.45 molar vapor-gas mixture, at 1200, 1400, and 1600 deg C and at various H-TaCl/sub 5/ ratios, showed no temperature effects on tantalum precipitation at concentration ratios up to 0.05 mole TaCl/sub 5/ per mole of vapor-gas mixture. A maximum yield 14.4 g per mole of mixture was obtained at 1600 deg C. The yield from TaCl/ sub 5/ reduction on a heated strip element was 9 to 11 g per mole of mixture with 25 to 30% TaCl/sub 5/ transformation into metal. (R.V.J.)
