Role of Mouse Lymphoma Virus in Induction of Myeloid Leukemia by X-Ray

Journal Article · · Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences
In experiments on the induction of leukemia in male adult Rf mice by radiation or radiation plus Gross virus and on the recovery of virus from the leukemic mice, it was found that the lymphoma virus of Gross alone is not leukemogenic in adult Rf mice but that it enhances the induction rate of myeloid leukemia by radiation. It was also concluded that thymectomy prevents the induction of thymic lymphoma by radiation in both normal and virus-infected mice. It enhances markedly the induction rate of myeloid leukemia by radiation and perhaps even that by radiation plus Gross virus. Attempts to recover the causative virus from radioinduced Rf mouse leukemias were suggestive but not conclusive. In contrast, virus could be recovered from virus-infected Rf mice that developed leukemias.
