The metabolism of albumin-complexed /sup 14/C-labeled palmitic acid was studied in x-irradiated rabbits to denote alterations in triglyceride formation. Rabbits exposed to 1000 r of whole-body x irradiation manifested a normal intravascular removal rate of labeled free fatty acid and an unaltered plasma FFA concentration during the hyperlipemic state. The conversion of albumin-complexed /sup 14/C-labeled palmitic acid to plasma triglyceride was increased fourfold in the x-irradiated group, however. Liver triglyceride concentration in the x- irradiated animals was lower, but specific activities were comparable in sham- and x-irradiated groups. Data from the present study and previous investigations concerning the etiology of radiation lipemia are highiy suggestive that a major factor in the genesis of radiation lipemia in the rabbit is an enhanced rate of formation of plasma triglyceride.
