With various mineral separation methods, including the technique of specific solvents, very pure fractions of metallic iron, troilite, olivine, and pyroxene were separated from the Holbrook meteorite. Helium and neon were extracted from those minerals. The measurements allowed a determination of the relative production rates of /sup 3/He and the neon isotopes by cosmic rays in iron, sulfur, magnesium, and silicon. The results enable the relative production rates of these isotopes in all kinds of meteorites whatever their chemical composition to be calculated. The ratio of the relative production rate of /sup 21/Ne from Mg and Si was 1.8 plus or minus 0.4. Therefore, it was concluded that the variations of the /sup 3/He//sup 21/Ne ratio in stone meteorites can not be explained by variations in their chemical compositions, at least not for the normal chondrites.
