Report on Meteorite Research. NO. 57. The Relative Production Cross Sections for He$sup 3$ and Ne$sup 21$ From Mg, Si, S, and Fe in Stone Meteorites; BERICHTE AUS DER METEORITNEFORSCHUNG. NO. 57. DIE RELATIVEN PRODUKTIONSQUERSCHNITTE FUR $sup 3$Ne AUS Mg, Si, S UND Fe IN STEINMETEORITEN

With various mineral separation methods, including the newly developed technique of specific solvents, very pure fractions of metallic iron, troilite, olivine, and pyroxene were separated from the Holbrook meteorite. Helium and neon were extracted from those minerals. The measurements allowed a determination of the relative production rates of He/sup 3/ and the neon isotopes by cosmic rays in iron, sulfur, magnesium, and silicon. The results enable the calculation of the relative production rates of these isotopes in all kinds of meteorites whatever their chemical composition. The ratio of the relative production rates of Ne/sup 21/ from Mg and Si is 1.8 plus or minus 0.4. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variations of the He/sup 3//Ne/sup 21/ ratio in stone meteorites can not be explained by variations in their chemical composition, at least not for the normal chondrites.
