STRONTIUM-90 AND CESIUM-137 IN PLANTS AND ANIMALS IN FINNISH LAPLAND DURING 1960

Strontium-90 and /sup 137/Cs in folder plants and in the tissues of reindeer and cow were analyzed from samples collected in Lapland during 1960. Reindeer lichens contained 4 to 15 nC /sup 90/Sr and 20 to 60 nC /sup 137/Cs/kg of dry weight, while sedges contained about one-tenth of the above values, the other grass plants even less. Reindeer meat contained 30 to 50 nC Cs/kg fresh weight, cow's meat 0.8 nC. Other soft tissues of reindeer contained one-half to onefourth of the /sup 137/Cs content in meat. Cow's milk contained in winter 15, in sumraer 9 pC /sup 90/Sr/g Ca while reindeer milk conthined 60 pC/g Ca in summer. On the basis of the analytical results, the observed ratios, nC /sup 90/ Sr/g Ca, in tissue/in diet in different tissues of reindeer were calculated. (auth)
