Lithium-drifted germanium detectors, doped with gallium or zinc, and providing deep depletion layers to give a linear relation between gamma energy and pulse height spectrum, are described. Their response to various gamma sources is graphed. Semicondvctor properties--radiation damage and surface effects---of the detectors are discussed. Scintillator developments using calcium iodide crystals are reported. Progress in data analysis by combining computers and pulse-height analyzers in one system is considered. (M.J.T.)
