GAMMA-GAMMA DIRECTIONAL CORRELATIONS IN Nd$sup 14$$sup 7$

Directional correlation measurements are made on the 320 to 92 kev and 280 to 320 kev gamma-ray cascades in Pm/sup 1//sup 4//sup 7/ following the decay of 11.1 day Nd/sup 1//sup 4//sup 7/ with a coinc idence scintillation spectrometer using NaI detectors. The observed correlation functions are: W( theta ) = 1-(0.1030 plus or minus 0.0298) P/sub 2/(cos theta ) + (0.0107 plus or minus 0.0099) P/sub 4/(cos theta ), and W( theta ) = respectively, for the two cascades. The energy levels of Pm/sup 1//sup 4//sup 7/ at ground state, 92, 410, and 690 kev are found to be 7/2/sup +/ 7/2/sup +/ 7/2/sup +/ and 5/2/sup +/ respectively. It is found that the 92 kev gamma ray has a mixture of (95 plus or minus 2)% MI and (5 plus or minus 2)% E2 with delta /sub 9//sub 2/ = + (0.229 plus or minus 0.143); the 320 kev gamma ray has a mixture of 1% Ml and 99% E2 with delta /sub 3//sub 2//sub 0/ = +9.95 plus or minus 0.11; and the 280 kev gamma ray has a mixture of 99% M1 and 1% E2 with delta /sub 2//sub 8//sub 0/ = - O.11 plus or minus 0.11.
