The problem of decaying eigenstates in a multiplying slab system was investigated in the B/sub 0/-approximation. The problem of a correlation between the eigenvalue s and the static value of k/sub eff/ was analyzed by an s- expansion. The general analysis of the prompt decay constant was performed in the usual manner by a B/sup 2/-series expansion. The integral equations for the spectrum and the integral representations of the eigenvalue were established for the different orders of B/sup 2/. For non-multiplying and 1/vabsorbing media the formulas of M. Nelkin were arrived at. For infinite-multiplying media the prompt decay constant can be regarded as the difference between total loss probability and total prompt production probability. The second order coefficient, which is closely related to the diffusion properties in non-multiplying media, appears to be changed by the explicit dependence on fission properties. (auth)
