NUCLEAR MOMENTS OF Yb$sup 17$$sup 3$

The hyperfine structure of the spectrum of ytterbium was studied, using separated isotopes 171 and 173 as well as natural ytterbium. The nuclear moment ratio mu (171)/ mu (173) = --0.7248 plus or minus 0.0008 was obtained; and from the known value of mu (171) the value mu (173) = --0.6802 plus or minus 0.0010 nm was obtained. The nuclear quadrupole moment of /sup 173/Yb deduced from the levels 6s6p /sup 3/P/sub 1/ and /sup 3/P/sub 2/ is 3.1 plus or minus 0.2 b withou t shielding correction. The method of the calculation is discussed. (auth)
